I wanted to log on because I was like I'm not the best at technology and I want to make sure.
I want to make sure I don't mess it up.
Well you're here so we're doing good.
And I think there is going to log on shortly as well.
We don't have to be nervous it's fine.
I like always get really nervous 'cause I know everything I'm talking about. I liked it, but when you're put in front of other people, it's like Oh my gosh so many people.
No I know that's exactly how I feel.
I even told the Arnaise 'cause. Uhm, when I talk to the arnaise I'm not as nervous, but when it's larger groups of people in Lego people.
It looked like a nice amount of people signed up.
I know it was like I forget how many like 30 or something.
I was like that's a nice amount of people that want to know information.
I know and this is a good way to do it since we couldn't have accepted student day so.
Yeah, it was smart. I've never heard of this before.
Probably 'cause I'm not the technology.
I'm good you can hear me.
So I told Dakota earlier I'm just gonna start and introduce myself and then um Dakota if you want to go first I'll just say Dakota and then you can turn it over to Sarah does that work.
And then I was going to I was going to alternate questions between both of you unless we get like.
Questions that like pop up that you didn't give me um.
And then I'll address those but I thought I'd like go back and forth between both of you.
Guess we'll just wait a couple minutes.
What was the turn out like yesterday?
I'm I'm not sure I think there might have been like 5 or 5 people or 6 people so like not a ton but this one I mean there's a lot of people signed up so.
Every day the depending on the sunshine in the lighting I feel like I need to position myself differently.
I know well that's like I've moved like 3 times already and I'm like this is this is fine like.
When I've been doing my late night meetings with students, half of them have been either from my couch, are from my bed, but during the day I don't think that's appropriate.
You can see me better when I do that OK.
Have a hard time not looking at myself when I do this and I know that's really weird?
Having the same problem like there I am.
Well, that's kind of what I like about sleet Is everybody's nice and evenly like position. It's not like the person that's talking is suddenly like really big on the screen like some of the others.
I've been using Hangouts with the students an because they seem to like it better, but the formatting for the pictures is so weird. As much as I play around with it, it's so strange.
Yeah it's weird I agree with you but we're starting in 5 seconds.
So far it's only ask 3 but that.
Hi everyone we are here uhm to discuss um.
Our second web and are in the series which is being a resident on campus and we want to take you through basic questions that everybody asks but if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us in the chat section but this is to kind of ease your worries and ease your anxiety because coming into school can be nerve wracking and I still remember that feeling so please feel free to ask us anything you want I'm going to start by introducing myself.
Uhm and then I'll turn it over to Dakota and Sarah so I'm alley Bennett I work in admissions I am the assistant director of freshman admissions and I also work with the student ambassadors.
I live in Crescent so I have like a 3 minute commute every morning to work and II'm also amount Braden I graduated in 2013 with my degree in business administration with a specialty in management and I worked at Mac for almost 3 years so you know we're really excited to be doing this obviously we would have liked to have it in person accepted student day but with the current crazy times we want everybody to stay healthy and safe so I'm going to turn it over to coda and she can introduce herself.
Maybe to cut his frozen she might be frozen how would I turn it over to Sarah and then maybe Dakota I'll come back.
I'm sorry My Internet cut out for a little bit, so I was trying to.
I was just saying we were gonna let you introduce yourself.
OK, well I'm Dakota broken. I am currently the interim director of residence, life and housing.
And then Sarah let you introduce yourself to.
Hi everyone I'm cerec lewinski I'm the director of student activities.
So again we're just going to open up questions on we do have some that were submitted by email but if you guys have any questions that people that are watching please feel free to send them in an will be answering them but the first question that I got through email is if I'm a computer should I still attend orientation and Sarah I think you can answer that one.
Yes so orientation is for everyone resident commuter traditional nontraditional transfer student everyone should be attending we do have an on line orientation via canvas the learning management software here at the Mount you'll get a login for it over the summer the intention of the canvas orientation is to supplement but not replace the traditional orientation so in canvas you'll get a brief run run run through of campus resources.
You'll have access to take you know some important alcohol and other drug training Title IX trainings health forms that sort of thing but the in person orientation is really when you get to see campus visit offices connect with other students it's kind of putting faces to names an realizing that you're much more than a number so it gives you the nuts and bolts that you need for the first day of classes and then it also gives you those connections that you need to be successful throughout the semester.
Because of the whole kovid situation things are going to be a little different this year we were originally going to have orientation in June so stay tuned for an announcement about a traditional orientation in August right before you start classes.
Awesome awesome awesome and then another question I know students are probably wondering and I actually get a lot as an admissions counselor is how do new student sign up for housing which Dakota I think you'd be a pro at that because you're in charge of residence life.
Yes, so there's two important things that new students need to complete in order to be able to sign up for housing. First you need to pay your housing deposit. That is $125.00 and it can be done through the business office. It can either be done on person or online and then the second part is you need to complete your housing preference form, which can be found on our website.
Can you go to your web the website Mount Ala wishes? Then you go to student life.
Um, go to living at MSE and then you click on the residence halls an at the very top. There is a tab that says housing application tab. You can click on that and that brings up the housing preference form and it will ask you all types of questions. What residence Hall you would like to live in, who you would want as a roommate? Different things like that and that is how you would apply for housing as a new student.
Yeah awesome and if anybody needs help like finding that link please feel free to reach out to your admissions counselor were always there to help in regards to you know 'cause sometimes you know you're looking for something and it's right in front of your face but you don't realize it uhm so we'd be happy to help next question that we got is can I join a club as a freshman or freshmen allowed to join clubs Sarah would you like to take that one.
Sure yes we have lots of clubs and organizations on campus some are academic based summer interest based and as long as the club isn't connected to like let's say the Pennsylvania state education Association which is a club but any interest academically or just something fun like art club or Bowling Club any student is welcome to attend in fact first year students can even serve an executive boards this is something unique to Mount Ala wishes.
Convert your students can be start clubs as well we don't have a ton of strict parameters on who can be leaders who can start clubs we just want the clubs to happen and we want to really meet the students and their interests so yes I'll give you a little information about club fair at the beginning of each semester we have multiple club fares.
In which students kind of have their they have a big poster board with all kinds of information about their club some members there sign up sheets information about the first meetings it's usually pretty well attended and that's the probably one of the best ways for a first year student to get involved we usually have it on 2 different days 2 different times and if you cannot make it and have a specific interest we can certainly direct you there as well.
Awesome thanks Sara and I learned something new too because I didn't realize you could be a freshman and serve as part of the basically the head of the club which is really cool.
You sure can especially if a freshman starting a club why wouldn't they become the president right.
Great that makes so much sense thank you so much um Dakota some people are asking how do you request a roommate is that something on the housing form that they can do.
Yes, that's something on the housing form a man. Also a lot of times individuals will find a roommate or a person that they want to room with after things like orientation or different admissions events. So if you already submit the housing preference form and then you find that individual that you would like to room with, then you just have to resubmit another form and we will go with your most recent form. So if anything ever changes, you resubmit the housing preference form and we can see when.
The housing preference forms were submitted when we will go with the most recent now. I will say that it does have to be mutual, so if you are requesting like if I'm requesting to live with Sarah but she doesn't want to live with me and she does down, we won't give that um roommate situation until Sarah says, oh, I forgot to apparent in the housing preference request. I do want to live with Dakota. I was just behind on getting that in. She put that in and then we will room the two individuals together.
Awesome an actually Sarah we have a follow-up question about clubs and someone wants to know how many people do you need to be considered for a school club.
LesPaul B.
11:08:24 AM
How many people do you need to be considered a school club?
You need enough people for an executive board so you'll need a president vice president treasurer secretary honestly that's all you really need I will say that if a club probably functions alittle better when there's more people to pull their weight but for a beginning club that is just fine to be recognized organization there is a form that students will complete on the portal page.
I don't believe that you would have access to it until you are actually a deposited student but under forms for a new club you would fill that out you would need an advisor and kind of a plan for your club like a constitution so let's say you want to start your own Bowling Club but there's already a Bowling Club here on campus we're going to ask you instead to kind of partner with the existing club.
Right OK awesome um I have a question uh another question are there ways for me to connect with incoming freshmen prior to orientation I don't know who would want to take that one maybe Dakota if you want to start or Sarah.
I can actually share something an I'm gonna have to look at my Phone for a second to tell you the link to it but we have an Instagram account specifically for the class of.
Steven N.
11:09:59 AM
Are there ways for me to connect with incoming freshman prior to orientation?
I don't remember the exact name of it uhm.
I believe it's Mount Ala wishes underscore 2024.
OK I was like no hallowishes 2024 why can't I find that.
OK yeah so Mount Ala wishes underscore 2024 you'll actually get to see other people on their in their stories an every day every few days there's a new like featured mountie there it's been really fun really.
11:11:00 AM
https://www.instagram.com/mountaloysius_2024/
Highly utilized and you know you could definitely add people an I from what I'm hearing there's some great success obviously I'm not accepting when people add my personal Instagram from there but other mounties have been adding and accepting each other and it's been a really great way to connect so an Instagram can be as you all probably know is a really positive social media platform in a lot of ways so it's really been a lot of fun but connect with the Mount Ala wishes College in like the official Instagram page as well as see what.
What our students are already doing as well so Oh thank you link to that is in the chat now thank you very much?
I approve the link to the chat so if anybody is watching and they need the link for the mountie 20.4 Instagram page it should be in your chat now but I was just going to add to that Sarah I think it's really cool seeing students that I might talk to because they're my students and putting a face to the name is very it's very cool because you know you don't know what these people look like when you're talking to them so it's really fun to see and to see their stories and see where they're from and what they like to do.
Oh it is it's give such a individualized approach to it an all of your senior pictures that you're posting are awesome I'm really loving them so.
I helped him to uh we have a question from Kendall E she wants to know if either of you know when moving day is for fall athletes.
Kendall E.
11:12:03 AM
do you know the move in day for fall athletes
I think we're still working on different things with move in day. And as Sarah said, different orientation dates just because of everything going on right now. Dates that were originally planned kind of had to get pushed back, but do you know we are working on that and as soon as we have that together there will be tons of information with that going out? I'm sure it would be posted to the site.
Uhm, I know I'll be sending information out about. I believe Sarah will be sending information out about it so you won't miss it. I promise that.
We have a student asking their parents want to know if Mount Ala wishes in Crescent are safe a safe area if it's a safe place to be.
11:12:44 AM
My parents want to know if Mount Aloysius and Cresson are safe communities
There am I able to answer that too, and then you can add so from the residence life standpoint on our campus safety.
We don't we are really on Top of it um are campus police office there's someone on 24/7 so if you ever need a ride from um an academic building to your residence halls they're more than happy to do that as well as our residence life staff we have for professional staff members and there is always an individual on call every day of the week and then we have 14 arres in each building and there are 2 of them on call every day of the week so if there's ever a problem we are right there to respond to it.
And everyone are UM campus community is like a family and it is a very safe place to be everyone's always willing to help everyone's always from a helping hand to holding open the door so it is a very safe place but if it's ever needed like I said our campus police office there's always someone on 24/7 uhm professional staff there's always one of us on one of the 4 professional staff members and then there is always 2 of the 14 oraison call as well if that's ever need.
Yes and I'd like to add to that just for a second something is really unique about Mount Ala wishes being a small private rural institution is that we have a fully sworn police force and coverage every single day every single hour are campus police are there right now we also have secure access into all of our residential buildings and a really great Camera system on our campus.
Which is comforting to a lot of students and their parents I think that in terms of safety Mount Ala wishes has done a great job in making sure that our students and community or safe?
Abigail Y.
11:14:42 AM
Are there any different orientations or requirements for transfer students?
Yeah so Sarah this might be question for you are there different orientations or requirements for transfer students as far as orientation goes.
So if you're a transfer student who is spent less than 2 years at another institution I would encourage you to come to our traditional orientation with the with all new students on move in day it's going to be your best way to acclimate yourself if you were let's say in your final 2 years or if you.
Um are non traditional student maybe have some life like some family an work expectations where you can't necessarily commit to a 3 day orientation we typically do hold an express' orientation which is a one day orientation for those students like I said those are for people who are either in their last years or have some life circumstances that would prevent them so I'd encourage you to go to traditional orientation in most cases.
I'ma stay tuned for the express' orientation there may be some more online components to that it may end up some of that may end up being enmeshed with the traditional orientation once again this is something that everyone's navigating a little differently this year so.
I will have information on that as soon as we feel comfort rible sending it given our current situation so apologies I don't have an answer 100% but my short answer is if you spent less than 2 years at another institution I'd really encourage you to attend traditional orientation.
MaryKate G.
11:16:16 AM
I was wondering about what club sports the mount has?
Mary Kate G wants to know um and Sarah I think this might be another question for you what club sports does manella wishes have.
I'm actually going to pass that question over to Dakota 'cause residence life actually operates are intermural sports.
Yes um this year it depends on what our student population once so we put it out there to each year our student population that we have 'cause every year to year it could be different graduating seniors might want something different incoming freshmen might want something different this past year we have done.
Volleyball so intermural volleyball run by one of our grad students uhm and that was during the fall semester as well as we had started intermural basketball um we were going to start an intermural flag Football League as well and then do a volleyball tournament so these are all things the students this year wanted so like I said it varies in the past I know there has been dodgeball as well so each year when the when the students come we allows the first few weeks to get underway.
And then we put information out about Inter murals via email and we get feedback from the students regarding what kind of intermural activities they would want typically we run 2 at a time and that will go for the whole semester so well and then spring.
I said thank you um jaquel wants to know is Maná which is a dry campus.
I don't know who wants to take that Sarah movie.
Andrew C.
11:17:49 AM
Is MAC a dry campus?
I can I can answer that question so in our housing facilities, any of our five residence halls Mount Ala wishes is a dry campus. Students cannot have alcohol in any campus living living space. However, I would our president, our current and also exiting college president.
Has described our campus as a damp campus, so there are certain events and activities in which students who are of age can partake in an alcoholic beverage. It's highly controlled so students that are 20, one who desire to drink at these events, have to scan their ID through an official ID scanner so fake IDs won't work. We provide them with a bracelet that indicate like a wristband that indicates that they can have a drink.
An we limit it to one drink per hour.
Our students that are serving alcohol have all been ramps trained. Um, have gone through some extensive training about that, and when I say one drink per hour, that would be like usually about a 2 hour event. So people are generally not having more than two drinks, so the culture is very much a weitkamp. I'm sorry, a dry campus culture is very much a dry campus, but there's the occasional event where those that are 21 May consume an alcoholic.
Canatara wants to know if I give my housing deposit late is there a possible chance I would not end up with a roommate Dakota.
Ann-Tarah V.
11:19:23 AM
If I give my housing deposit late, is there a possible chance I will not end up with a roommate?
So single rooms and questions regarding whether I'm going to have a roommate or not is a very big question right now with returning students an incoming students across the board we cannot guarantee single rooms just because we do not know what our housing capacity is going to look like on also a lot of our rooms are not designed to be single rooms.
We when I mentioned about how to sign up for the housing process you need to pay your deposit and do the housing preference form in order to be placed in housing and I would encourage to do that sooner rather than later because our housing does fill up really quickly and the later you wait there are fewer options just because more individuals have been signing up prior to signing up so I would not wait.
And like I said there aren't any guaranteed singles I know people do want single rooms but at this point there are no guaranteed singles.
Right OK thanks so much and then of piggybacking off of that I have a couple questions uhm come again so number one is how do people find out who their roommate is and what room number they're in and I'll let you answer that first before I go on.
Typically around July we send out information in a housing packet and that will have your roommates information helpful hints for UM when you come to campus for a new student move in what to bring what not to bring things like that.
It will also have your roommate's contact information so you will be able to get to know that individual prior to coming to campus if you don't know that individual already and we do try to set individuals up based off of the housing preference form so if you like staying up later we're going to try to align you with someone that also like staying up later rather than putting you as someone that might be waking up at 5 AM now if you have that mutual request so say Sarah requested to live with me and I requested to live with Sarah we do.
Try to honor those an put those individuals together.
Andrew C.
11:21:45 AM
What if I don't like my roommate?
It has a question and he wants to know what if I don't like my roommate which kind of goes along with this whole thing 'cause sometimes you think you're going to let that person and you don't So what happens then.
OK, so that does happen. You get to campus and you meet this individual and then sometimes you figure out that maybe there a good friend, but you don't want to be rooming with that individual. Bringing the first 2 weeks. We do have a consolidation period so you might have met someone else.
Up through Inter murals through student activities through different clubs and organizations. By that time that you'd rather want to room with an so consolidation period allows for you to kind of either find a new roommate, swap rooms, change rooms, and that's a two week period. Like I said, so you can then say you know what I might want to live with this person rather than this person. I'm still good friends with that roommate. I just don't think we work as a roommate at this time, so I'm going to move in with this person and that process. Like I said, it's a two week process and typically done.
Two to three weeks after people get on campus just to give people time to come.
Get to know other individuals now if it is an extreme situation where the two individuals really aren't Jelly, well, you can come to residence life or go to your RA and discuss with them. We do do a roommate.
Roommate agreement so basic.
And I know sometimes people are like roommate agreements. Why do I have to fill those out? You'd be surprised at what it gets you to discuss and things you don't think about from simple as turning on the bathroom light while someone else is sleeping to when you're coming and going. Just common courtesy. That gets people to discuss so we do do that when people first come to kind of help. Individuals have those conversations, so it's out of the way before it gets to that point where it's like, I don't know if I want to live with this individual or not.
So Sara uh I know we have a new E sports program would you like to discuss some of that and that all that exciting news with that program.
Sure, we do have an E sports program. It is kind of on the ground. Still, we're getting it off the ground as a club sport in the spring. Luckily, this is something we've still been able to kind of maintain a little bit, virtually because you can gain from anywhere as long as there's some Internet access you can game and connect with other gamers. Right now, the game that we plan to compete with is League of Legends, which is probably the number one game for college.
Collegiate E sports. At this point someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think League of Legends is number one. We have a coach, Nick Alverson and E Sports Lounge in the basement of Cosgrave with State of the art computers chairs. Just know that this is E sports for PC, not console, so this is for PC gaming and I'm sure if you're a console gamer you can easily learn PC if this is something you're interested in. We're looking at having teams to be both competitive and also.
Have opportunities for Club E sports for those that just want to be a part of it. For fun, we will be having open gaming hours for the.
He sports lounge. So obviously team members are practicing. It will be closed, but we're going to have some open times as well and I am going to real quickly. She share my screen.
With you so we can take a look at the E sports webpage at Mount Ala wishes. I hope you're seeing that so you can look here. The specs of the computer.
Um, the keyboard. The headsets that we provide, so we provide all of this really nice equipment. The gaming mouse.
Gaming tables really nice gaming chairs.
And we've partnered with American E sports in John's town.
For our program, you can learn more about.
You can learn more about Nick Coach Albertsen Here. There's a link to contact him.
And he's looking for to make those connections those Contacts so.
It's really new and exciting. Um, if you have any more specifics, I would contact coach Alverson.
But this is really where higher Ed is going, and we plan on, um, treating this as a just as we would any other in intercollegiate sport because it is an intercollegiate thing with intercollegiate regulations. And pretty serious thing. And we think it'll it'll be a really great addition to our campus.
Right I think it's really cool I think it's very exciting and fun so.
How about can you talk to us a little bit about uhm maybe something that you should not bring to your dorm because I know when students are moving in they probably want to bring their whole room or their whole house and you definitely can't bring something so if you want to talk about that for a little bit that would be great?
So on the website on our housing page there are layers.
So don't give dimensions. They give images. Uhm. So if you have a question regarding what the layout of the room and trying to fit different items from your room into this residence Hall room, those are great resources to look at. And there's also videos that walk you through what each Hall looks like as well.
Items to not bring and keep at home. Um air conditioner heater uhm.
And then any pets or animals. I'm a big animal fan, but we don't know who might be afraid of different animals who's allergic. So, um, pets and animals have to stay home. I'm sure your family will give them plenty of love while you are gone, but please don't bring them because it makes me feel sad because I'm such an animal lover when I have to say the animal can't be here, it has to go. Um. But so those are some things, uh, there's a full list of what you can't. What's recommended.
To keep at home and what's recommended to bring and some suggested things to bring on the website as well. So that's a great resource to look at as well, and you can also always email residence life at Mount Aly.edu and we will get back to you with any of your questions. If you are unsure whether or not you should bring something or not bring something.
Andrew C.
11:28:51 AM
Do you have any outdoor activities aside from intramurals?
Awesome thank you I have a question about outdoor activities it says aside from Eldora actively aside from Inter murals what other outdoor activities do we have.
So we have a pond on campus and we have fishing gear that you can sign out. Let's see we have a disc golf course on campus as well as a nature trail with signage. It's short, but it's there and.
Were our dining services expanding? Some of those things as well with their gardening and composting and all of those sorts of things in with student activities. We also try to provide some outdoor activities. In the past, we've done outdoor adventure days. During orientation, we've done hiking trips, cycling here on the ghost town trail. We've done some play sports like shooting trips our president has taken students on full moon hikes. We've done kayaking, stand up, paddle boarding.
Those sorts of things were super, super fortunate. We're in the Laurel Highlands region of the state, and there are a lot of outdoor opportunities here, so beyond things offered by Mount Ala wishes. There's also links on our web page to some various outdoor rec opportunities here in the area. Prince Galitsin State Park, Canoe Creek State Park, yellow Creek State Park. There are lots of State Parks right here, as well as the Allegany Portage Railroad National Historical site, which is right?
Press in, which is a really cool place to visit and it also connects the six to 10 trail, which is a really, really cool trail. So we've got a lot of rain here.
It is a really cool trail everybody should definitely check that out.
I have a question from Matt um he says so I heard the cafeteria food is great but are there any other restaurants or coffee shops on campus as well.
I can start answering it and if I forget something, please jump in Sarah rally so we do have a Mac Shack. Uhm, it's.
11:30:56 AM
I've heard your cafeteria food is really good. Do you have any restaurants or coffee shops on campus, too?
Right off of the UM cafeteria or the dining Hall, a man there hours are a little bit different. An if you need to kind of grab something before class or in between an activity or before sporting event. You can go and grab something and then take that food with you to go. And then this year we also got Starbucks in the Mac Shack as well. So there is an on campus coffee area that a lot of students have been really excited about in utilizing and they make amazing drinks as well.
An am I forgetting anything? Sarah rally.
I don't I don't think so there's been a lot of changes uhm a lot of it just in our dining Hall to begin with a lot of really great changes a lot of options for all different sorts of diets and it's only got better as the year has gone on and the Mac shack lots of great improvements to that too and yes Starbucks has been a hit.
Yes I have a question from Steven and he said can freshman bring vehicles on campus.
Steven N.
11:31:56 AM
Can freshman bring their vehicles to campus?
Yes, they sure can. We have enough parking for everyone, they will just need to obtain a parking pass through campus police. So when you come here for orientation or before that, bring your vehicle registration, your drivers license and you can purchase a parking pass their. Your vehicle must be registered so please try not to swap in and out vehicles unless you contact campus police and then the registration. The cost for vehicle registration on campus will be.
Added to your bill through the business office.
11:32:40 AM
Can I have a car even though I'm a resident?
And I think it's important to point out that commuters as well as residents residents are also allowed to have cars on campus 'cause that is a question we just got so yes residents are allowed to have cars on campus another question is Sarah you kind of spoke just now about you said about orientation and getting your parking pass our parents allowed to come to orientation or they encouraged to come to orientation what is the role with that.
So we have some designated parent sessions at orientation. We will kick-off with parents and the Mount Ala wishes students being together and then eventually they break off into separate groups. After that, will have some designated a little bit of free time to say goodbye to your student. If there a resident of course. And then so after that first day. It's kind of just the students at orientation, but we will have. Like I said, day one there will be a full afternoon of designated parents sessions.
Well, I don't see anymore um questions on the side. Ladies would either of you like to say anything else in closing this whole UM web and arm?
Sure, we are so excited to have you. I miss our students so much and I am so excited to meet all of you. Mount Ala wishes is a great place. A really great place to connect with other students to really start your career and to have a really good time. We're missing campus so much we really cannot wait to meet you and we really wish we could have met you in person today. But thanks for joining us this morning.
Yeah I agree, uhm, I'm we're looking forward to new student move in day so much. Um, it's one of the.
Greatest days we ever have. His residence life. Just because our whole staff is there were having a great time. We're meeting new students who are excited. We're meeting parents who are excited to move their new students into their rooms and we're all on board an all there to help. So you will see the full staff.
